Maintaining Balance in An Unbalanced World

Between work, kids, school and life in general, it can be hard make sure that all the needs in your family are being met. During the first few years of a child’s life, especially, it is easy to become consumed by the child and lose touch with your spouse, your friends and even yourself. It is during these stressful times, however, that we most need the support of our friends and family! One thing that all new, or “old”, parents alike should strive for is balance between ALL aspects of their life.

This task can be difficult, especially for new moms. Infants take up so much time and energy; often everything else gets pushed to the side. There are some things we can do to keep our lives less hectic and make sure we have time for everyone—including ourselves.

  • Set realistic goals. It generally is not possible to have a spotless house, a healthy, home cooked meal and a happy baby every day. Some days are better than others.
  • Put people before things. Almost everything can wait. Put aside folding the laundry and take time to play with your child for a minute.
  • Don’t over schedule. Do your kids really need to run from one activity to the next?
  • Take time for yourself ! It is not selfish to go off on your own—it makes everyone happier.
  • Find creative ways to spend time with your spouse. Find a trusted friend or sitter at least once a month to have time to reconnect with your spouse.

To find more suggestions about how to maintain balance in your life, and to meet with other parents, come to our Columbus Attachment Parents meeting. Held the second 2nd Saturday and 4th Thursday of the month. See the calendar for details.

Have A Green Picnic

Laptop Lunches for waste free lunchA great way to enjoy a summer afternoon without spending much money or producing a lot of waste is to take a lunch to the park! If you bring friends along you can set up a pot-luck and each bring a dish to share. Everyone should bring their own dishes and utensils, but bring the real ones instead of their paper or plastic counterparts that will just be thrown away.

Make your afternoon more meaningful by vowing to leave the park cleaner than you found it! Bring along a garbage bag and recycling box or bag and walk the park picking up litter that others have left behind. You’ll feel good about helping out your park and your kids will learn a great lesson about caring for our environment.

More opportunities for volunteering in our local parks can be found on these sites or search online for your favorite park:
