So I watched the segment on NBC 4 about BPA-free products, of course. Overall I was pleased with the exposure.

But… during the segment Ellie also spoke with Dr. Terry Barber with the Columbus Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. This is what he had to say in regards to the chemical Bisphenol-A:

“The scientific community has absolutely no concern… There isn’t any evidence for me to say it is unsafe to buy the BPA products.”

If there isn’t a concern, why are retailers pulling products made from poly-carbonates off of their shelves? Why has Canada restricted the import of any plastics that contain BPA?

BPA may not be a concern to the scientific community in small doses. But it is a concern for your children. Especially babies who might be exposed to BPA in baby bottles many times a day, children who use sippy cups made from poly-carbonate plastics day after day, and even for adults who drink water from the ever-popular disposable water bottle. One drink from a poly-carbonate cup won’t kill you, but studies of BPA have shown neural and behavioral effects have been seen in infants and children. See the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences FAQ on BPA and the testimony of Norris Alderson, Ph. D. from the BPA task force.

For this reason parents are turning to BPA free products, like our Green to Grow BPA-free Baby Bottles and stainless steel sippy cups.

As a parent, what to put your baby’s food in is your decision, but since there are so many BPA-free products available, it’s certainly worth it to switch.

This morning I was interviewed by Ellie Merritt of NBC4 in Columbus. She asked if she could come to the house and see where we run Sprout Soup and talk about the BPA-free products we have available.

The story will air this afternoon, on First at Four. If you have come looking for the products shown, check out our Safe Feeding Category, or for Kleen Kanteen and Sigg Bottles as well as great BPA-free products for adults, turn to Baying Hound.

Wondering if you should make the switch to BPA-free products for your child? Here’s a couple rules of thumb. First, plastics labeled 1, 2 and 5 are the safest plastic. Turn the cup or bowl over and look for the number inside the recycling symbol. Sometimes the symbol will have letters beneath it. The letters “PP” stand for poly-propylene. This is one of the more stable and safe plastics. The letters “PC” stand for poly-carbonate. This plastic is known to have bisphenol-A and should be avoided.

If your plastic isn’t marked, you can learn some things about it just by look and feel. Softer plastics often have phthalates which should also be avoided. However some soft plastics are thermoplastic elastomer, like in our Foogo Sippy Cups, or silicone, like the valve in our Safe Sippy. Poly-carbonate plastic is often used to make plastic look like glass. So clear, glass-like plastic cups could be made from the harmful PC plastic. Look for plastics that are hard, solid and opaque, and choose sippy cups and food containers that either use no plastic or do not allow the food or drink to sit in plastic, instead they have glass or metal reservoirs with plastic tops.

Remember food and drink should never be heated in plastic, and hot foods and drinks should not be transferred into plastic containers. The longer food or drink is exposed to harmful plastics, the more chance there is of chemicals like BPA leaching into the food and drink and then being consumed by your child. Feel free to give us a call if you have questions about BPA or any of the products we carry.

We have listed the gorgeous and completely BPA (and plastic!) free Bambu Mini Me Bowls. Currently we only have the cayenne color available, but hope to have more in August.

With a newly redesigned spout, valve and top, the Safe Sippy is back and better than ever. The valve now is larger and shaped for easy insertion and removal. The spout is still straw shaped, but easier for children to use. The top threads directly on to the stainless steel, with the plastic top covering and protecting the lip of the cup from dings and damage.

The Safe Sippy is a cup that will grow with your child. With it’s straw-shaped spout it encourages good muscular development in your child’s mouth, plus the cup does not look too ‘babyish’ for those cool big kids. The cup handles are removable, so little ones can easily grab and later on the handles can be removed.

Grab your Safe Sippy today, in pink, blue or green. Clean in, clean out.

Summer is here, or at least summer weather has arrived. Here in Ohio we’ve hit 90 the past few days. It’s HOT. So with the sun and warm weather our thoughts start turning toward getting away. Time to take a family vacation!

Getting away is grand! Seeing the sights, playing with your kids all day, a temporary hiatus from your responsibilities. Sometimes, though, getting to your destination can cause stress and dampen the excitement. Here’s a couple ideas of games to play in the car or on a plane that can help keep your children occupied and looking forward to the trip.

Children ages 4 and up will enjoy keeping a scrapbook of their trip. While the younger ones may not have the ability to keep the book organized or neat, they will still enjoy making a book all their own. We found a small photo book with blank pages for our son to use on a trip we took last year. We gave it to him at the airport and explained what it was for. I also packed glue, safety scissors and colored pencils for him to use. He had a great time searching for things to add to his book, like pamphlets from the places we saw, ticket stubs and fliers. In the evening we helped him write down what he remembered from the places we visited.

Pack your bags with fun things to do in the car or on the plane. Older kids will enjoy writing and coloring, doing activity books or reading. Younger children might need something a bit more entertaining, but if traveling by plane, realize your fellow travelers may not appreciate noisy toys.

The <a href=http://www.sproutsoup.com/hape-colorback-sea-turtle-magnetic-maze-c-46-p-1-pr-171.html" title="Magnetic Turtle Maze">Colorback Sea Turtle Magnetic Maze from HaPe has multiple uses for kids of all ages.

More Beco Butterfly Carriers are on their way to Sprout Soup! Here is a run down of the patterns that are now in stock. View our Beco Butterfly Baby Carrier page for photos of the fabrics in use and to purchase your carrier. $4 flat rate shipping inside the USA.

Ethan is a carry over from the April lineup. This one is a gorgeous yellow orange color, bright and sunny for summer! The honeycomb print is medium to large, with only a few bees showing up on each carrier. This one looks stunning on brown straps. Comes with removable brown hood.

Emma is a brand new print, with a trendy pear print on brown. This print is large, so check out the model pictures on our Beco Butterfly page to get a perspective of how it will look on your carrier. This one is really sweet, and I love it because it’s great for both boys and girls, and I know there are lots of fathers out there who love the Beco Butterfly carrier!

Chloe is one of those that doesn’t quite look as good in the swatch as it does on the carrier. In person this one is just delightful! I love the mod dots, and chocolate brown and pink are a winning combination. Once again, the dots are large, much more mod than polka dot.

The Beco Butterfly in Olivia is quite elegant. Long vine-like lines with smaller flower-dots on a background of lush brown. This popular print is sold out, we have more arriving in May, please use our contact form to contact us if you’d like to be placed on the list to receive one of them.

Carnival is back! This popular print debuted on the Beco Butterfly in January. It’s return has already been well received! The brown background with funky mod florals in pinks, orange, green and yellow. It’s fun, it’s flirty, it’s Carnival. Carnival is sold out now, we expect more at the end of the month. If you would like to claim yours now, use the contact form on our site to get your name on the list.

Aubrey is taking the lead as the new favorite. The print on this one is large, the trees cover much of the carrier, with smaller flowers thrown in. The background is smooth white, green trees and red flowers. Lovely!

Try the Metro Black Beco Butterfly. A sleek and solid choice. Everything on this carrier is black, the buckles, the straps, the hood, but it’s definitely not plain!

Want a solid carrier with a little bit of flair? Then the Espresso is the one for you. Solid brown, just like a nicely brewed Espresso, or maybe some yummy chocolate! The Beco Butterfly Espresso will match everything, looks great with khakis or board shorts!

These are so adorable and I love that they are recycled or reclaimed wood.

A creek runs behind our house. My boys could spend hours down there, digging in the sand, throwing rocks in the water, generally getting dirty and having fun. We took our little wooden boat down and had fun letting it float around in a part of the creek where it was safe from the strong currents and kept getting pushed back toward shore.

For a little more adventure, we could have secured some fishing line to the boat’s mast and let it go on its merry way while we held on to the end and ran along side the creek. I suppose that in the summer the boys won’t care too much about how far the boat goes and they will just jump right in the water after it.

Spring and warmer weather is here!

Here at Sprout Soup we love the Moby Wrap. It’s our number one recommendation for expecting parents. The basic Moby is a workhorse carrier, with its soft and stretchy fabric, it’s like wearing your little one in your favorite t-shirt. The Moby Wrap is great for newborns and infants because it can do both a cradle carry and an upright position. The upright position is preferred by many babies, especially those with reflux.

Some will say that the Moby Wrap has a short usefulness time frame. I can’t disagree, the stretchy wrap, while working in the favor of new babywearers, can become a problem when the child reaches 20-25 pounds. The Moby D with a woven or silk panel can help give a little extra support and extend the wear-ability of this carrier, but even so, the basic Moby Wrap is invaluable in the early months.

This past weekend we attended the Everything Baby Show in Cincinnati. We had such a great time sharing our passions with new and expecting parents. Of course the Moby Wrap was a big seller, but we also found some new and creative uses for the wrap that we thought would be fun to share.

First, check out our display, I was quite pleased with the outcome. We had a great location and I had so much fun planning for and setting up our booth. Making the trip from Columbus to Cincinnati for the show wasn’t easy, and we of course forgot some things and didn’t completely think through others. The Moby Wrap came to our rescue! So we present the many uses of the Moby Wrap.

In packing for our trip, I remembered my weighted dolls that I use for demonstration (you’ll see one of them later, they are gorgeous Waldorf-style dolls created by a good friend of mine who also makes adorable childrens clothing at PirateBootieBaby.com) , but I forgot the dolls I usually place in the demo carriers on my mannequins.

This mannequin is sporting a Moby D in Green Silk and Black. But just a Moby Wrap looks a little strange, so I put a Moby in it’s package inside the wrap. Worked perfectly! In this picture the Moss Green Moby is peeking out a bit so you can see it, although during the show it was down a little further, and the mannequin looked like it was wearing a new little babe. A great benefit was having the tag hang out over the top so customers could see right away that the mannequin was wearing a Moby Wrap.

If you’re the proud owner of a Moby Wrap, you may have noticed that a Moby in it’s fabric bag is pretty heavy. About 2 pounds. Of course it doesn’t feel that heavy when wrapped around you, but its packaged weight came in handy this weekend.

While putting the merchandise in our booth we noticed that our display racks were starting to lean a little bit. We’d planned our arrangement different than we had ever done before. It worked great in our space, but obviously was a little unbalanced. It needed some counter-weight. Our extra Moby Wraps were just the thing.

It’s probably hard to tell from the photo at left, but we used an extra basket and the Moby Wraps that weren’t on display to hold down the back of our racks. This photo was actually taken near the end of the show, our stack of extra Moby’s was much larger when we started, in fact the ZoloWear Slings you see at the bottom of the photo are in a large tub we used to stop the Moby Wrap avalanche that would have occured with so many stacked upon each other like that.

And of course we were quite thrilled to bring home quite a few less of those 2 pound packages than what we came with!

And finally, on the last day of the show I switched things up and took the Pikkolo off one of the mannequins and replaced it with a Karma Baby pouch. The Pikkolo was quite a hot item as well, and it was a bit of a pain to keep taking it off the display so that people could try it on.

The trouble was, however, that the Karma Baby Pouch I had was a bit too big for the less than life-like mannequins. The pouch was pretty saggy, and while the general public probably wouldn’t have noticed, I didn’t want to promote unsafe babywearing or the improper use of fitted pouches.

Once again a Moby Wrap came to my rescue! I stuck a packaged wrap behind the pouch, pulling it in on the mannequin and bringing it up to a more natural position. If you looked at the display from the side it was a little strange-looking, but fortunately our display of shoes and leg warmers was much more interesting than the back of our mannequin. And there’s one of our beloved weighted Waldorf dolls in the pouch. An added benefit of using the Moby behind the pouch was that it helped even out the mannequin and keep her from toppling forward if someone brushed up against her.

Here’s a photo from underneath, showing the wrap in action:

I hope you enjoyed our creative uses for the Moby Wrap. It’s such a wonderful carrier and we’re so pleased to be able to offer it at Sprout Soup.
